Heaven

Number of moves: 20

As the first EKKA kata, be sure to show off what you have already learnt for previous belts

Key points:

  • strong, low stances
  • locked back leg in front-stance
  • correct feet position in back-stance
  • fold before moving

Lake

Number of moves: 26

Adding front kick, this kata repeats the first block/kick/punch combo and has low-middle-high blocks in the middle

Key points

  • hands remain in position after the block, during the kick
  • keep your knee high after the kick into the fold, don't drop your leg while your foot is still extended for the kick
  • land in a good stance after the kick

Fire

Number of moves: 22

While the first half may seem more straight-forward than the previous two katas' , the stepping backwards adds complexity

Key points:

  • still keep the stances, folds, blocks and punches strong
  • make a clear distinction between body-level punch at the start and head-level punch in the middle and end.
  • the double-side block fold will really show if your feet are not in line for back-stance
  • kiai on the last move, unlike previous katas, as the kiai is on the strike (in this case head punch)

Thunder

Number of moves: 26

Introduces double blocks, turn moves and horse-stance

Key points:

  • first move is a upper-block and side-block at the same time, practice upper-block in back-stance and then add the side-block: the upper-block goes across the body/face and not around as if it was an overhead punch.
  • keep the back-stance position between the blocks and strike
  • feet position when transitioning is very important

Wind

Number of moves: 35

A relatively long kata (with 35 moves), but should not be rushed

Key points:

  • low-knife-hand and knife-hand have the same fold
  • the blocking arm should tilt slightly down from the elbow with the other hand pulled right back
  • make a clear distinction when stepping out from back-stance (side block) to front-stance (double punch)

Water

Introducing new stance (x stance, kyocha sogi) and back-fist down strike

Key points:

  • on the first kick, pull back the hand that's about to punch and extend the other hand (but not as an extra move)
  • step, don't jump into the back-fist down strike
  • fold for the back-fist down strike right up by your left ear

Returning to basics with a front-stance as the first move, this kata quickly adds additional moves such x-blocks, knee strike and crescent kick

Key points:

  • pull back fists after the first double block, during the kick, ready for the high x-block
  • you should be able just to see under your hands on the high x-block
  • keep the left arm up during the crescent kick and the right hand tight in position

Name of an Ancient Korean Dynasty

The final kata for black-belt adds concentration-moves which demonstrate balance and a sense of timing

Key points:

  • at the start, don't slap your hands against your sides
  • hold hands so you are looking slightly up, through your hands
  • explosive full-fold from the hold position into knife-hand block
  • you can do double-side kick or a single side kick; for double-side kick, there must be a full fold between each kick
